Celebrating the Journey of EcoRobotik Learning Center

It’s been a few months since we opened the doors of EcoRobotik Learning Center, and every day has been a gift. I love it here. From the energy of the kids to the passion of our team, this place has truly become something special.

One of the things I enjoy the most is working with small groups. It allows each student to receive focused attention from our amazing coaches. We see the difference — students not only understand STEM concepts better, but they also start gaining confidence in themselves, and that’s everything.

I want to share a beautiful moment that truly touched my heart. One of our students from the Little Bots class went home and excitedly told her dad, “Today we learned about loops! We were looping actions for our robot!” Her dad, who is a professional programmer, was amazed that his young daughter was learning such advanced coding concepts at such an early age. These are the moments that fuel me — seeing our students grow, dream big, and realize their potential.

But this journey wasn’t mine alone. EcoRobotik exists because of a team effort. I’m so thankful for:

  • Katie Kear, our talented copywriter who helped us shape our message and voice

  • Trish Cortez, who’s been by my side with planning and operations

  • Manuel Salgado, whose expertise in finance and expansion has been crucial

  • Vladimiro Mujica, a dear friend and mentor — I was actually his student over 16 years ago at Arizona State University

  • Larry Cortez and Isabel Valadez, your support means the world

And my heart overflows with gratitude for my family:
My amazing husband Carlos Meza, my twin daughters Adrianna and Nicole, and our little one, Baby Sofia — thank you for your love, patience, and belief in this dream.

And above all, I thank God, for the strength, health, and purpose to be part of this mission — to inspire and teach the next generation of innovators.

Whether our students are homeschoolers or come to us after a full day at a traditional school, we cherish every one of them. I’m just so grateful to be teaching small groups again, where real learning and connection happen.

Is current education at the service of sustainability?

Nowadays, we are more aware of the role of education as the main axis of social development. However, it should be pointed out that education goes beyond the mere transmission of knowledge; education requires training competent people capable of adapting to the current society’s needs.

Therefore, one of the social requirements is to learn to use the limited resources available in a sustainable way, to learn to live and coexist harmoniously with our environment; thus avoiding in the near future shortages of resources that are mostly non-renewable and indispensable for our existence. The above allows us to question ourselves, how to educate towards sustainable development?

Beforehand, it is necessary to know and understand the concept of sustainability. This term appeared for the first time in the United Nations Brundtland Report in 1987 and refers to the ability that humanity has to make “development sustainable to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”[1]. To this end, it establishes three essential pillars: environmental protection, social development and economic growth; where it is assumed that sustainability considers that nature and the environment are not an inexhaustible source of resources, so their protection must be promoted through cohesion between communities, while improving the quality of life of individuals in that community and thus promoting economic growth without damaging the environment.

In short, to be sustainable is to coexist with the environment and nature while strengthening communities and obtaining social, cultural and economical growth.

For this reason, we affirm that one of the challenges facing today’s society is the promotion of sustainable development; and in order to contribute to it, the United Nations approved the 2030 agenda containing the objectives of sustainable development, which are a series of goals that seek to protect the planet, ensuring the welfare of the population.

It should be noted that if we want these goals to transcend and not remain just another proposal, we need the full support and commitment of everyone; as individuals who are part of the social fabric, as well as the support of companies and the government of all countries in the world.

On the other hand, we must not forget that education is an essential tool to achieve sustainability because through it people are empowered to change their way of thinking and to work towards a sustainable future.

For this reason, it is necessary to include in the curricula, as part of the citizenship competencies, activities that reinforce or are focused on sustainable development. The classroom is an appropriate place to introduce small actions favoring sustainability for the students because they will introduce them as habits into their lives; thus, guaranteeing the formation of people more aware and capable of protecting the planet. At the same time, the implementation of relevant and culturally appropriate programs contribute to an education focused towards sustainable development.

In conclusion, an education focused towards sustainable development means restructuring the education system in order to train competent and sustainably conscious people to work towards the benefit of society, leaving aside individualistic and selfish patterns that only help to further deteriorate the planet and deplete existing resources, while promoting social, cultural and economic inequality. Each of us should be aware that our actions can have positive or negative effects on social welfare, if we act without thinking and without measuring the consequences; on the contrary, we should all try to be part of the solution and not the problem. Finally, reflect on how your own actions can contribute to sustainability and start applying each of these new ideas little by little into your life. Play your part on building a better planet.

Do you use technology responsibly?

To begin with, technology is defined as a set of knowledge and procedures that allow human beings to modify their material and virtual environment to satisfy their needs and create useful solutions to them. Human beings have always been curious by nature. This curiosity has led them to try to discover what exists beyond what they can see. For this they have devised devices, lenses, robots, artificial intelligence, means of communication, and transportation. That with many others, that brings them closer to the object of their curiosity. Water, earth and air are no longer an obstacle to the advancement of human knowledge, since human beings have found the need to face the great challenges offered by nature and the world around them. This led them to go beyond all possible frontiers to find answers to their great questions.

It should be noted that these technological advances have made life easier and more bearable, since they provide us with many benefits in all areas of our daily lives. In the field of medicine, we can see that these advances are focused to overcome and cure countless diseases that we face daily, and these have helped us to prevent, diagnose early and cure diseases that in other times would be deadly for humanity. Nowadays, we can see how mankind is increasing in the need to develop new and advanced technologies to deal quickly, safely and effectively with the ailments that society is facing and provide solutions for their eradication, such is the case of the health emergency that humanity has been facing for months, a pandemic that has been caused by the COVID-19 virus and mankind has been in the desire to find possible solutions through vaccines.

Technology has also positively impacted the field of education, as it has become today an indispensable tool to promote communication between teachers and students in order to facilitate and streamline educational processes allowing equal opportunities for all, promoting knowledge and productivity in the classroom. These open up new innovative, playful and expressive spaces such as games, among others.

This dizzying technological growth despite providing positive benefits can also bring negative consequences for our lives, if we do not give them a proper and controlled use. Since these tools such as the internet, cell phone, tablet, etc. have become so indispensable in our lives that we feel like we die without them and create addictions that often take us away from family, friends and society. In general, it makes us sedentary bringing with it diseases such as obesity and therefore our emotional, mental and psychological health will also be affected.

We also see clearly in today's society that human beings in their desire to get everything they want have dedicated themselves to exploit nature for their own benefit, altering the natural laws, destroying plant and animal species and the environment where they live to turn them into large urban and industrial centers transforming the landscape and climate resulting in pollution, however, the human being is not aware of what is causing and continues to misuse these resources. If mankind does not become aware of this, in the not too distant future we could possibly be ending or exterminating our planet Earth as we know it.

In my personal opinion, I believe that all these technological advances have led mankind to positively transform the lives of all, but it is essential that these advances are also accessible to all. If not, rapid technological changes can increase inequality and move us away from the goal. However, all good things bring negative effects, this seen in the case of the automobile, an indispensable transportational element, but undoubtedly one of the artifacts that pollutes the atmosphere the most due to the gases it emits into the environment.

Another positive aspect of technologies is in the field of education since they bring us closer to knowledge, promoting self-knowledge and teamwork, but they can also harm our health if they are not used properly. According to the above, some questions arise, such as: Can technologies and social networks have a positive impact on the education of children and young people? How can we improve our lives with technology without affecting nature? What actions can be carried out so that humanity makes rational use of resources?

To conclude, we can say that technologies are useful for societies of all times since they have allowed human beings to have a simpler lifestyle in all areas of their life, but they must learn to use it consciously so that it does not cause negative effects on their life and the environment that surround them. Now it is your turn to ask yourself, do you use technology in a responsible way?

Sensors and their remarkable role in the world of robotics

This month we continue our topic about the essential parts of a robot and we will focus on sensors: these have the function of collecting data or information about the activity performed by the robot as well as the environment in which it is located to record different measurements related to temperature, speed, altitude, weight, orientation, distance, among others in order to process these values and store them for analysis.

Do you know the different types of sensors that exist today, would you be able to name any of them at this moment? let’s get to know some of them:

  1. Force sensor. They allow the measure the force applied to an object with precision, these sensors can be found in industrial robotic arms in assembly factories.
  2. Tactile sensor. Allows the robot to sense physical objects around it, the capacitive touch sensor uses electrical conductivity properties to detect objects as well as the resistance touch sensor by using the application of pressure to detect objects.
  3. Temperature sensor. These allow a robot to measure the temperature around it, they have application in scientific research.
  4. Light sensor. These allow a robot to detect changes in light intensity, they are useful in disaster areas with confined spaces to find possible exit routes.
  5. Sound sensor. These allow a robot to compare sound amplitudes in value ranges to analyze the data and determine the distance of objects.
  6. Chemical sensor. They allow robots to detect chemical properties in water or air samples in an environment potentially hazardous to a living being, this data is useful for measuring alkalinity and acidity values in soils and rivers as well as CO2 levels in the air.
  7. Proximity sensor. These sensors allow a robot to detect proximity with respect to other objects.
  8. Infrared sensor. These allow to detect changes in the values of infrared radiation.
  9. Ultrasonic distance sensor. These sensors emit high-frequency sounds that bounce off the surface of the surrounding medium and return to the robot.
  10. Positioning / navigation sensor. Those are used to determine the position or speed of a robot with the help of signals emitted by space satellites received by the robot, such is the case of the GPS system.
  11. Digital magnetic field sensor. Provides directional measurements, using the earth’s magnetic field, to guide the robot in the correct direction to its destination.
  12. Acceleration sensor. Also called accelerometer, it measures the acceleration and inclination of the robot. There are two forces that affect an accelerometer: the Static Force or friction between two objects such as the gravitational force of the earth (the force with which the earth attracts objects to it), this allows to measure the inclination in the position of the robot. Then we have a second force, the Dynamic Force which is the amount of acceleration that an object requires to move.
  13. Gyroscope. If we do not want or cannot make a robot depend on the gravitational force of the earth to maintain its orientation, the gyroscope helps us to maintain the orientation of a robot by measuring the rate of rotation around a particular axis.
  14. Voltage Sensor. They convert high voltages to low voltages and vice versa, they allow to find the potential difference between two extremes, there are electronic circuits that monitor the constant flow in an electrical circuit.

Nowadays, technology allows robots to learn from the data they collect, so robots are in the process of becoming important support tools for humans.

So far we have been able to learn important concepts of robotics and understand a little of its importance. In our third installment we will talk about another very interesting topic.
