A tribute to those who helped build EcoRobotik.

Dr. Vladimiro Mujica was much more than an internationally recognized scientist—he was a humanist, educator, mentor, and friend. As Scientific Director of EcoRobotik, he believed that education should prepare young people not only for college, but for life and meaningful work. He often spoke about “educación para el trabajo” (“education for work”), emphasizing that knowledge becomes truly valuable when it empowers people to contribute to society with purpose, creativity, and integrity. His vision continues to inspire EcoRobotik’s mission of preparing students to become future innovators, problem-solvers, and compassionate leaders.

Beyond his remarkable scientific career, Dr. Mujica believed that science and humanity could never be separated. He often reminded us that great science is born from curiosity, humility, and respect for others. He believed that as we learn to appreciate people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, we also become better scientists. To him, science was not simply the pursuit of knowledge—it was a path toward understanding one another and improving the world together. His words continue to shape the culture of EcoRobotik and the way we teach every student who walks through our doors.

Dr. Mujica earned his Ph.D. in Quantum Chemistry from Uppsala University in Sweden and later became a professor at Arizona State University, where his research in theoretical chemistry, molecular electronics, electron transfer, and chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) earned international recognition. He published extensively, collaborated with scientists around the world, and mentored countless students throughout his career. Yet those who knew him best will remember not only his brilliant mind, but also his generosity, kindness, and unwavering belief that education should help build a more compassionate and understanding society.

A Personal Reflection

Over the years, I came to understand what Dr. Mujica was trying to teach us. Science is not only about discovery—it is also about humanity. He believed that when we learn to value, respect, and care for one another, we become better scientists and better people.

At first, I didn’t fully understand what he meant, but with time I realized that true education goes beyond knowledge; it is about building a more compassionate, understanding, and tolerant world. His example continues to guide EcoRobotik every day, and I will always be grateful for the wisdom, friendship, and inspiration he shared with us.
